catching up on the recent week

Mon Sep 11, 2006, 8:49 PM
Well, it's been a long a** time since I've posted a journal, so for anyone who cares, here's what's been going on with me.

I was in Jakarta for about three weeks. Was supposed to be there until the 5th of October, but due to unexpected family reasons, I had to come back to Singapore. My film production diploma course starts on October 23rd so my uncle hooked me up with an internship at his friend's branding agency called Blue Duck Design. So, I've been interning there for about a week now. The internship is going well. I went in last Tuesday at 10am on the dot, but Abraham (my boss and my uncle's friend) wasn't even there yet. hehehe.. He was still in Bali and hadn't told the other guys at the office that I was coming. So my first real day was Wednesday. Not bad. I've been packing drugs for them so now I know how it feels like to work in a drug factory....................

No, no. Just kidding! Gotcha! hehe.. They've got a client that's doing an anti-drug campaign. So they have these postcards with the drug names (i.e. CANNABIS, COCAINE and METHAMPHETAMINE) on them. The text goes: "If this was COCAINE you just picked up, you'd be facing a minimum of 8 months in jail. Lucky for you it's only white sugar." So, I had to fill up these little plastic zip-loc satchets with icing sugar and glue the satchets onto the postcards. To do the MJ was slightly more difficult; I ended up using dried moss and getting some grass, microwaving it to dry it out and then mixing the two together. And the meth.. oh. my. god... that's the worst. At first I went out and bought some UHU glue, and started filling the satchets. When I'd made 24 of them already, Irvin (my other "boss," besides Abraham) told me that because of legal implications, I couldn't just put glue in the plastic. He wanted water, so I had to start again with water. Thing is, in the bottom corners of the satchets, there are little holes, so I had to take a lighter and quickly burn the corners to make them melt and fuse together. But even still, some of them were leaking. I've already glued the coke and weed bags, but as I was heading out on Friday, I noticed that some of the meth bags were leaking. So, I had to take care of that all on Monday.

Luckily for me, it's only a promotional thing and only going to be used for one event, so I'm only making 50 packets of each. But the water bugged the hell out of me.... T_T;

Oh yeah, last Thursday I helped out at an awards event. I did pretty much the same thing as last time: registration and handing out goodie bags. It was a tourism awards event, so awards were going to the top agencies for their best advertisements, on print and on film, too. I went to the place (Grand Copthorne Hotel) at about 2ish and stayed there until the end of the event at 11ish. I got free food, too! hehehe.. So, Discovery Travel & Living was one of the main sponsors, so guess who MC'ed the show?? .................... someone 'famous'.................... don't know?

Asha! =D so cool to see her! Since my camera is still broken, I didn't get a pic with her =,( but I got her autograph. Actually, she wrote what was on her mind so I got a personalized message! It says, "You are not allowed to come to any more crap boring events like this! You'll lose your street cred! <3 Asha" ^^v

Very, very cool! She was doing a good job onstage as MC, it was just the audience consisted of industry people who basically didn't recognize her and just wanted to get their awards and leave. So, while she was making jokes and all, I was one of the few, if not the only, person in the room laughing. Also, because the meals were served during 10-15 minute breaks, when Asha was introducing a category, people were still eating. So, I clapped a bunch of times, sometimes I started the clapping =) hahaa.. like the slow, loud clapping. Like, the way Homer did it in that one episode =P

So, that was really fun! And I don't mind the whole registration and handing out goodie bags. I live for that stuff! XD Also, during the rehearsal for that event, I met a guy who is working part-time as part of the sound group for the events. And I'll be meeting up with him on the 22nd, too. And I introduced myself to the event organizer, Nigel, who was actually at the other event, too. Also, introduced myself to Angelia, a woman who works at AdAsia; she was also at the previous event, too, so I recognized her. She said that she has some Indonesian friends, so I might be meeting up with her this Friday. So, I made a few contacts, which is a good thing. I'm starting to get a hang for this networking and socializing skills =P

Oh yes, and the best part about interning and helping out at these events is that yesterday, after work, I went to Bisous (a bar/restaurant in China Square Central) and met up with Irene, Irvin, Abraham, Kevin (one of the other guys at Blue Duck; the other one is Alvin). I got $50 from Irene for helping out at her event and an additional $60 from Abraham for the internship. =D My first real money that I worked for =) I'm very excited about that. So, I had $110 yesterday! As Abraham was giving me the $60, he mentioned something about more coming or it wasn't enough for the days I went, but I'll just see this coming week. Plus, I opened up my bank account here, so I'm loaded! hahaha.. well, not really, but still.. I have my own money and don't have to ask my uncle for more.

Also, I have booked a room at a hostel and bloody hell, it has an 11pm curfew. Anyway, if I don't come back by 11pm, they already close the gate. And unlike what they say on their website or over the phone, apparently I can't even "inform the management" in advance that I'll be coming back a little late. F**k.. I guess when I check in, I'll get the lowdown of all their rules.

I'm really excited for this month. It's looking to be really good so far, and if I make about $60-$70 a week, that's not bad at all.

So.... Yup.. that's pretty much it! =) A lot's happened and it's been real fun and I hope will continue to be fun. More updates on the way, hopefully.

piece.

last week at Aksara =,(

Mon Jul 18, 2005, 4:21 AM
Hi ppl....

Yup, it's my last week doing all the tasks I wrote about in my previous journal entry. Kinda sucks. I've made friends here really fast in the past month. And now, just like my friends at school, I gotta say good-bye to them. And I don't know when I'll be visiting Indonesia again. Because my parents will probably fly in to L.A. from Japan (where they will be moving to and teaching in Yokohama) to have a Californian Christmas.

I'm taking the day off, either to hang out with my "junior" (soon to be seniors) friends at Dufan (theme park? i guess...), or go with one of the Aksara guy's brothers. He wants to take me to a place where all his friends hang out. All his EMO friends. I'm torn. I'll probably hang out with emo kids all day. We'll see.

JIS kids, I'll be here for a full week after school starts again. So, I will see you guys one last time before I leave. You can bet on it. I'll be one of those graduates who comes back to visit teachers and students. So sad... =P

Anyway, I'll update soon. Or not. We'll see....

Take care everyone.

the start of a new day (cont'd)

Tue Jun 28, 2005, 8:54 PM
okkayy...... i didn't continue yesterday.....

i got in at 10:30ish today. same as always. i'm soo tired. -_-

Aisha....... :fella: i work at Aksara bookstore in Kemang. And basically, I browse through the books and pick ones that the store manager would like to feature online on their website. Then I go through the tedious task of writing down the title, author, publisher, number of pages and price of each book. Then I go online to Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com and find reviews to borrow (while citing them). I also save pictures of the book covers. :O_o:

After all this, I go to the Aksara website and upload each book as well as their book cover images. :eyepopping: I can only go through about 15-20 books each day. It's a really easy, but time-consuming job. :-X

Actually, the Aksara staff do this, too, but there isn't a designated person to do this every day, every week, throughout the year. So, I'm allowed to do this for experience (not money :bleh:) and something to do to pass my summer before I leave Jakarta on August 18th:!: :-(

Weeeeeees.... have ur smokes run out? I hope I get to Spore before you leave, coz that would really suck if I didn't. Or, u should stay longer, till the first week of August, coz that's when I'm scheduled to go.

Nate..... u lucky dog, you.... I'd love to go to Bali and have a house there.. that's cool, man.. hope to see you again before I leave.

Alice... we have to hang out before I leave, ok!! talk philosophy and sip coffee. and smoke. hahaha... come by Aksara sometime. Farid was asking when you'd stop by, and I said, I dunno... Coz I don't. When?? =)

And... last but not least, Mich.... how's Argentina? hope it's all good....

Man, I feel like I'm writing a will... Like a senior will.. hahah.... oh yeah, Aisha, sorry for not adding u in there, I didn't really know u back in January when I was writing it. :-(

okay.. i should prolly start work.. i'll add later or tomorrow.. take care everyone! be safe... (especially wes... haha)

the start of a new day.... of fun and boredom

Fri Jun 24, 2005, 6:31 AM
well, this time i've truly outdone myself :eyepopping: I've stayed until the bookstore closed (9pm). It's been cool though. Working here is awesome. =D

i've uploaded some pics, just stuff I was messing around with. I don't think they're good, but just for u guys to see.. Maybe I should stick to the poetry.. (hey, that rhymed =P)

whew...... i'm just waiting for a friend right now.. out for a night of fun and drinking and shmoking =) but somehow, a group of 8 ppl wittled down to 3, so it's no biggie..

dunno why i'm going out tonight, i'm so tired.. =P but it's one of the last chances i will have to hang out with these guys, so why not... meh...

oh yeah, i get the day off tomorrow, so no net access for me this weekend... or maybe.. we'll see...

aight, i'm out... updates on monday.. hope you all like my work... =D
